1. Immediate Post-Treatment Instructions
What to Expect:
- Mild discomfort, swelling, and possible bruising around the implant site
- Minor bleeding or pink-tinged saliva for the first 24 hours
- Numbness for a few hours if local anesthesia was used
Do’s and Don’ts for the First 24–48 Hours:
- Do rest and keep your head elevated when lying down
- Do apply an ice pack to the cheek (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off) for the first 24 hours
- Don’t touch or disturb the surgical site with your tongue or fingers
- Don’t smoke, vape, or use straws for at least 72 hours
- Don’t consume hot or spicy foods, alcohol, or carbonated drinks
Pain & Bleeding Management:
- Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications as directed
- Bite gently on gauze if bleeding occurs, replacing every 30–45 minutes as needed
- Switch to moist heat after the first 48 hours if swelling continues
Dietary Guidelines:
- Stick to a soft, cool diet for the first few days (yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs)
- Gradually reintroduce warmer and more textured foods as healing progresses
2. Ongoing Care & Maintenance
Oral Hygiene:
- Rinse gently with salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water) beginning 24 hours post-op, 2–3 times daily
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean surrounding teeth; avoid brushing directly over the implant site for 1 week
- Avoid mouthwash with alcohol during the first week
Healing Abutment or Temporary Crown Care:
- If a healing abutment or temporary crown was placed, avoid putting pressure on it when chewing
- Clean gently around it using a proxy brush or cotton swab if recommended
Smoking & Alcohol:
- Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least one week, ideally longer, as they delay healing and increase the risk of implant failure
