Sedation Dentistry Aftercare Instructions – Oceanic Dental

Thank you for trusting Oceanic Dental for your dental care. If you’ve received nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or IV sedation for oral surgery, this aftercare guide will help you recover comfortably and safely. Please follow the steps below, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions.

1. Immediate Post-Treatment Instructions

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas):

  • Recovery is rapid. You may feel back to normal within minutes after the procedure.
  • You can typically resume normal activities right away unless otherwise advised.

IV Sedation (Oral Surgery Patients Only):

  • You must have a responsible adult accompany you home and stay with you for at least 4–6 hours.
  • Rest for the remainder of the day. Do not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for 24 hours.
  • Nausea, drowsiness, or grogginess may occur – this is normal.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and start with soft foods when ready.

Do’s and Don’ts (First 24 Hours after IV Sedation):

  • Do keep your head elevated when resting.
  • Do stay hydrated and eat soft, easy-to-digest foods.
  • Don’t consume alcohol, smoke, or use recreational drugs.
  • Don’t sign important documents or return to work or school the same day.

2. Ongoing Care & Maintenance

After Nitrous Oxide:

  • Resume your usual oral hygiene routine.
  • Be cautious if you feel lightheaded immediately after treatment – wait a few minutes before standing.

After IV Sedation:

  • Continue to take it easy for the first day.
  • Begin brushing and flossing gently, avoiding any surgical sites.
  • Use prescribed medications exactly as directed.
  • Eat nourishing, soft foods until fully recovered.

3. Recognizing Complications & When to Contact Oceanic Dental

Call us immediately if you experience:

  • Persistent nausea or vomiting beyond the first few hours
