Dental Crowns & Bridges Aftercare Instructions – Oceanic Dental

Thank you for trusting Oceanic Dental for your restorative dental care. Whether you received a temporary or permanent crown or bridge at our Huntington Beach or Fountain Valley office, this aftercare guide will help ensure comfort, durability, and long-term success. Please follow the instructions below.

1. Immediate Post-Treatment Instructions

What to Expect:

  • Mild soreness around the gums for a few days
  • Sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common, especially with temporary crowns
  • Numbness may last several hours if anesthesia was used

If You Have a Temporary Crown or Bridge:

  • Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods that may dislodge the temporary restoration
  • Chew on the opposite side of your mouth
  • Brush gently and floss carefully – slide floss out instead of snapping it up to avoid pulling the temporary off

If You Have a Permanent Crown or Bridge:

  • You may experience slight pressure sensitivity for a few days
  • Resume normal eating and hygiene routines once numbness wears off

Do’s and Don’ts (First 24–48 Hours):

  • Do avoid chewing until numbness fully subsides
  • Do take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed
  • Don’t consume extremely hot or cold foods if you’re experiencing sensitivity
  • Don’t bite hard objects or use your teeth to open packaging

2. Ongoing Care & Maintenance

Daily Hygiene:

  • Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Floss daily, especially around bridgework; consider floss threaders or water flossers for easier access

Protecting Your Crown or Bridge:

  • Avoid biting into hard foods like ice or nuts with the crowned tooth
  • Wear a nightguard if you grind or clench your teeth
  • Maintain regular dental cleanings every 6 months

Product Tips:

  • Use fluoride toothpaste to help protect the underlying tooth structure
  • Anti-sensitivity toothpaste may help if sensitivity lingers

3. Recognizing Complications & When to Contact Oceanic Dental

Please contact us if you notice:

  • Persistent pain or discomfort when biting
  • Crown or bridge feels loose, cracked, or dislodged
  • Gum swelling, bleeding, or signs of infection
  • Bite feels uneven after a few days

4. Recovery Tips & Best Practices

Helpful Tips for Long-Term Success:

  • Treat crowns and bridges like your natural teeth – clean them daily
  • Be gentle when flossing around bridge anchors
  • Use a nightguard if recommended to prevent damage

Friendly Reminder:"A crown or bridge restores your bite – your care helps it last."

5. Follow-Up & Contact Information

Temporary crowns or bridges may need follow-up for permanent placement within 2–3 weeks. Be sure to attend your scheduled appointment to complete treatment.
