Why Mouthguards Matter

Whether it’s beach volleyball, skateboarding, or soccer, summer sports bring fun — and risk. Up to 39% of dental injuries are sports-related, and many involve children or teens. The right mouthguard can save a tooth — and thousands of dollars in treatment.

The 3 Types of Mouthguards

  • Stock Guards (Least Effective)Boil-and-Bite Guards (Moderate Protection)
    • Pre-shaped and ready-to-wear.
    • Pros: inexpensive, available at any sporting goods store.
    • Cons: poor fit, bulky, often uncomfortable; minimal protection
    Boil-and-Bite Guards (Moderate Protection)
    • Softened in hot water, then molded around teeth.
    • Pros: better fit, affordable.
    • Cons: less durable, still not precise; can affect breathing/speech.
    Custom-Fit Guards (Gold Standard)
    • Made by your dentist using digital scans and lab fabrication.
    • Pros: superior comfort, durability, and shock absorption.
    • Cons: higher cost ($150–$300).

Why Custom Mouthguards Are Worth It

  • Fit snugly and don’t shift during play.
  • Allow easy breathing and talking.
  • Protect not only teeth, but also jaws, lips, and even prevent some concussions.
  • Long-lasting and tailored for growing smiles (can be remade as kids’ mouths change).
  • Oceanic Dental’s Tip for Parents

If your child plays sports, a custom mouthguard is one of the most important investments in their health. One dental injury can lead to a lifetime of treatment — and a custom guard is far less costly.

A worn or dirty guard loses protective power—and can harbor bacteria. After every use, rinse your guard; deep-clean weekly with mild soap or a denture cleaner; and replace it at least each season (or sooner if you spot cracks). Studies show 53.5% of combat athletes and 17.4% of team-sport players only replace mouthguards when damaged, not routinely—so don’t be that player.

Don’t Skip Your Helmet or Face Shield

In sports like cycling, skateboarding, or baseball, a sturdy helmet and optional face shield team up with your mouthguard to protect more than just teeth.

    A Caring Note from Oceanic

We love seeing our patients stay active and healthy, and protecting your smile is part of that. If you or your child play sports, let’s talk about getting a mouthguard that truly fits — so you can focus on the game, not the risks.

    Have an Emergency Plan

If a tooth is chipped or knocked out:

    1. Rinse it gently, holding by the crown—never the root.
    2. Reinsert if possible, or store it in milk or saline.
    3. Call Oceanic Dental immediately for same-day advice and care.
