1. Immediate Post-Treatment Instructions
What to Expect:
- Mild soreness or sensitivity in the treated tooth or jaw for a few days.
- Temporary numbness from anesthesia that can last up to a few hours.
- Slight swelling or discomfort when chewing is normal during the initial healing phase.
If You Were Numbed:
- Avoid chewing on the numb side until sensation returns.
- Be cautious not to bite your cheek, lip, or tongue.
Do’s and Don’ts for the First 24–48 Hours:
- Do eat soft foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth.
- Do rinse with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8 oz water) to soothe the area if needed.
- Don’t chew sticky, hard, or crunchy foods on the treated tooth.
- Don’t skip pain medication if prescribed – take it as directed.
Pain Management:
- Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage discomfort.
- Use cold compresses on the outside of the face if there is mild swelling.
2. Ongoing Care & Maintenance
Oral Hygiene Routine:
- Brush and floss as usual, but gently around the treated area.
- Continue good oral hygiene to keep the area clean and prevent infection.
Tooth Protection:
- Your tooth may be temporarily restored with a filling or temporary crown – avoid chewing directly on it.
- A permanent crown will likely be needed to protect the tooth from fracture. Schedule this with us as soon as recommended.
Sensitivity Management:
- Sensitivity to pressure or tapping may persist for a few weeks but should gradually improve.
- If pain worsens instead of improving, contact our office.

Tips for a Smooth Recovery:

- Avoid chewing ice, hard candies, or using the treated tooth for biting.
- Keep the area clean, but don’t over-brush.
